That Darn Urine!!!
Ammonia produced by rabbit urine is an unpleasant smell, but is dangerous to your rabbit's health too.
Persistent high levels of ammonia, will damage the nasal passages of your rabbit(s). The nares in the nose, filter out pathogens become damaged and usually respiratory disease will come soon after.
As you can see its IMPORTANT to keep a clean cage for each bunny rabbit!!!
Diarrhea?Adding tea, or Iodine to the water bottle (or crock) for the first week that you have your new bunny rabbit will help the digestive system. Adding a tablespoon of "Old Fashioned Quaker Oats" to their food and feeding unlimited amounts of GOOD quality rabbit food plus hay will help prevent stress and diarrhea.
When you purchase a rabbit make sure to get a small bag of the same brand of food that the bunny rabbit was eating and make the transition to the new food very SLOWLY.
If you change food be sure to to do it GRADUALLY. Mix about 20% of the new food to the old food and increase the amount gradually over a two to three weeks period.
Getting Skinny? (Not eating)If food in the dish wet, damp or "puffy" looking dump the food and refill. Moisture collects in a pellet very quickly and becomes moldy very fast. Mold is toxic to rabbits, many are smart enough not to eat food when it is moldy but not always do. Throw out any old food. Rabbits also can get hair-balls just like cats! Be careful and watch out for hairs (furs) in the pellets they also sometimes resembly a string of beads. If you are seeing this you need to contact your local vet now.
Weather? its ALWAYS CHANGING!!!SPRING:
AT ANY RATE, PROTECT YOUR BUNNY RABBIT FROM WINDS THAT CAN CARRY ALL SORTS OF BAD THINGS INTO EYES AND NOSES OF BUUNY RSBBITS. WEEPY EYES AND SNEEZING NOSES ARE PART OF THE SPRINGTIME TRANSFORMATION. A TARP OR PIECE OF HEAVY PLYWOOD WILL WORK FOR A WIND BREAK BUT WON'T OBSTRUCT THE AIR FLOW EXCEPT IN THE DIRECTION OF THE WIND. TEMPERATURES CAN SOAR UNEXPECTEDLY LEAVING A POOR BUNNY TOO HOT.
SUMMER:
It is IMPORTANT that your bunny rabbit is kept in a well shaded and well ventilated area during the summer. KEEP YOUR BUNNY RABBIT OUR OF THE SUN AT ALL COSTS!!! Fill 2 litre soda a gallon of milk with water and freeze them overnight. On ANY day that the temperatures are expected to exceed 85 degrees, put one or more bottles in the cage with your bunny rabbit.
WINTER:
In the winter your bunny will get a "winter coat wich his longer and not too mention warmer! But, there are ways you can make your bunny rabbits life more comfortable!!! We tend to want to cover them up as soon as the temperatures start to drop. But that defeats their natural instinct to grow a winter coat!!! The wooden houses with no floor work well since the urine and feces will drop through the wire but the top of the box will keep them nice and warm. Plastic igloos or cocoons are another easy place for them to snuggle and keep warm.
